LeisureDistrict.net strikes strategic partnership with ExpediaTM
LeisureDistrict.net, the leading global online community, is enhancing its already content-rich 'community' offering by creating a virtual airport on the site.
ExpediaTM, the comprehensive online travel site operated by Expedia Inc, has been signed up to be the major content provider for the airport, which is set to go live in early February 2000.
LeisureDistrict.net members will be able to research and book their travel and holiday requirements direct from the site. LeisureDistrict.net is currently exploring opportunities for further strategic partnerships to build on this exciting development.
Steve Laitman, Chief Executive of LeisureDistrict.net, said: "Travel plays a big part in everyone's lives, so it naturally followed for LeisureDistrict members to be offered the chance to organise their travel requirements direct from within their community. Expedia offered us the perfect solution."
Commenting on the deal, James Vaile, Managing Director of Expedia.co.uk, said: "Expedia has a proven track record and continues to lead the online travel sector. This partnership means the community will now have the benefit of Expedia's hands on travel planning and booking services."
The virtual airport initiative coincides with an announcement from e-district.net plc (formerly Synet Communications), LeisureDistrict.net's operators, of its intention to seek a quotation for its shares on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM).
e-district.net plans to raise £[15]m to fund development of the business. Market capitalisation at the issue price is expected to be over £[100]m.
LeisureDistrict.net is a fully-fledged virtual community generating 100 million page views per month and with over 1.6 million members registered worldwide (January 2000).
Divided into a number of 'Activity Centres', the site offers community driven participation in virtual version of a real district. Activities include:
- Community Centre
- Games Arcade
- Library
- Greetings Card Hall
- Sports Centre
- Shopping Mall (including department store - The NetStore)
- Pet Zone
- News Stand
LeisureDistrict has been designed specifically to simultaneously embrace PCs and interactive TV, overcoming significant design and technological issues, to capitalise on the growth of both mass media. The site recently announced an agreement with WorldGate Communications Inc, a leading interactive television provider based in the US. WorldGate's Internet on EVERY TVsm Service offers cable subscribers high performance, low cost internet and email access without the need of a personal computer via existing cable TV infrastructure and wireless keyboards.
WorldGate has acquired four of LeisureDistrict's activity centres in a bid to enhance its web TV content offering. These activities - chat, private messaging, NetPets and games - will soon be fully accessible through WorldGate-affiliated cable TV Service.

ABOUT WORLDGATE
Headquartered near Philadelphia, WorldGate, a leader in the development of interactive television, was the first to commercially deploy a service that enabled cable subscribers to access a full array of high-performance, low-cost Internet services and e-mail through their television sets and the cable television infrastructure rather than a personal computer and telephone line. WorldGate is currently deployed in cable systems owned by Bresnan Communications, BuckeyeCableSystem, Charter Communications, Prestige Cable, Click!Network, Massillon Cable, and Comcast Cable Communications. In addition, WorldGate has international deployment and trial agreements with 19 MSOs in 13 countries worldwide. The WorldGate Service marries WorldGate's proprietary technology with the television set platform to use either the existing advanced analog or digital cable converter along with a remote control or wireless keyboard to bring the Internet to cable subscribers. Using advanced analog converters, the Service operates at more than 2 times the speed of a standard 56 Kbps telephone modem. With digital converters, the Service operates at speeds up to 38 Mbps, over 3.5 times faster than a typical cable modem. In addition, WorldGate's patented Channel HyperLinking technology allows viewers instant access from the program they are watching to a related Web site or locally available information sources. For more information, interested parties may go to www.wgate.com. WorldGate Communications' stock is traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol WGAT.
WorldGate and Channel HyperLinking are service marks of WorldGate Communications, Inc.
