...Sybase technology to help run the largest women's-only sporting event in history...
Sybase today announced that it will provide software, services and support for the 1999 Women's World Cup Soccer Tournament, which kicked off in the United States on June 19, 1999. As a marketing partner, Sybase software will help run the month-long tournament's accreditation, results gathering and distribution systems. Sybase was part of the technology team that delivered the most advanced information system ever developed for any single sporting event with France'98, the Men's World Cup Soccer Tournament.
"We're excited to have Sybase on board as an official marketing partner for the Women's World Cup Tournament," said Marla Messing, WWC President. "Sybase's technology is World Cup tested and we feel secure that we have the most advanced technology systems in place for our tournament."
The application used by the statisticians at each venue was built with Sybase's development tool PowerBuilder. The accreditation system developed for this year's tournament will populate Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere databases. This will run on Hewlett-Packard laptops and Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere will communicate with Sybase Replication Server to update the Adaptive Server Enterprise database located at the Organising Committee headquarters in Los Angeles. The solution will support the process of providing credentials to press, participants and support staff at each venue. The data from the games will be distributed to the public via Sybase's PowerDynamo so that fans will have access to up to the moment game scores and highlights throughout the tournament.
"We're excited to be associated with the 1999 Women's World Cup Soccer Tournament -- which is slated to be the largest women's-only sporting event in history," said John Chen, chairman, CEO and president of Sybase, Inc. "Our record-breaking performance last year with the France '98 Men's World Cup Tournament was an excellent way to showcase our best-of-breed technology.
"We broke four Guinness Book of World Records including the most popular Internet event and most visited web site with over 1.1 billion hits in one month and the most hits on an Internet site in one day with over 73 million hits. That included over 10 million hits in one hour and over 200,000 hits in one minute. We're looking forward to providing similar, robust technology solutions for the Women's World Cup this summer."
Sybase is partnering with Women's World Cup Official Sponsors EDS and Hewlett-Packard to deliver the technology solutions for the tournament.
